Daniel's award-winning results

When Avalon BOP Inc member Daniel Kitchen made the decision to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award - Bronze level, he was under no illusion it was going to take a lot of hard work.

But after completing six months volunteering at the SPCA, three months each of physical recreation at the BOP polytechnic gym and art at the Avalon Art room, along with one practice and adventurous journey, the hard work has paid off and Daniel is now the proud owner of the award.

For the past six months he has been steadily working towards the award, with his proudest achievement being the adventurous journey which saw him embark on a three-day tramp along the Karamatura valley.

“I really enjoyed camping at the camp cave site and felt immensely proud when we reached the Karamatura carpark and my parents were waiting there to congratulate me, it was such a good feeling.”

Daniel says he had originally decided to work towards the award as he wanted to get fitter, be more independent and gain more courage to take on responsibilities.

“I feel like I have achieved all of these goals and it has been great to work towards something and receive the results I was hoping for. It has really given me a new level of confidence.”

Daniel now plans to look into what the police force does along with fostering a new found love for outdoor pursuits such as hunting, canoeing and exploring new places with his friends.
