Changes to Training and Workforce Development Fund

In 2013 MSD carried out an independent evaluation of the Training and Workforce Development Fund.  The evaluation looked at a number of things, including how the Fund was utilised and what impact it was having.  As a result MSD has made some changes to how the Fund is targeted so that it better aligns with current government policy and direction.

The changes include:

  • A greater focus on training that contributes to service improvement and development.  Training that is focused on meeting minimum employer and organisational responsibilities and accountabilities under legislation or guidelines will no longer be eligible for funding.  This includes training for first aid certificates and drivers’ licences.
  • Staff employed on fixed term contracts will now be eligible for funding, if they are on a contract for a minimum term of 12 months and are applying in the first 3 months of their contract.
  • Relevant courses provided by the sector’s Industry Training Organisation, Careerforce will now be considered eligible for funding.
  • Applicants who have exceeded the $4500 per person limit and who were employed in a vocational service prior to 2009 will be eligible for extra funding up to $1000.
  • Those undertaking study towards a qualification will now also be required to provide proof that the funded course, paper or unit standard has been passed.  If the course is not completed and/or passed a refund of the grant may be required.
